On the 28th of November 2012, while His Eminence Ling Rinpoche was traveling to Goa to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama in order to accompany His Holiness to Drepung and Gaden Monasteries for the Jangchup Lamrim Teachings, Rinpoche and his entourage were in a car accident.
Rinpoche experienced injuries to both his legs, with a broken femur in his right leg and a dislocated hip in his left leg. Following surgery on both legs, Rinpoche remained in Goa’s Apollo Hospital for 10 days, after which he was moved to the home of Dr. Anita Dudhane.
Rinpoche’s leg remained in traction for one month. He was then able to use a wheel chair, and after two months, was able to walk for short distances with the help of crutches. Rinpoche’s walking has improved, though he remains dependent on the use of crutches.
Rinpoche’s medical treatment is undertaken with the blessing and advice of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Rinpoche is currently in New Delhi, receiving medical treatment and continuing to recover under the medical guidance of Drs. Tseten Dorje, Anita Dudhane and Barry Kerzin.
Among Rinpoche’s entourage, the driver, senior Drepung Loseling monk Gen Lobsang Tsultrim, died immediately in the accident. Secretary T.T. Lingtsang experienced serious injuries, including broken ribs, for which he underwent surgery; he has recovered very well. Attendant Tenzin Younten received a fracture in his right femur and is now fully recovered.
Rinpoche is profoundly thankful for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s kind visit to him in Goa, and is most appreciative for the opportunity to meet His Holiness in New Delhi. Rinpoche is also most grateful for His Holiness’ great concern for his health.
Rinpoche wishes to convey his deep appreciation and thanks to all followers, friends and well-wishers from around the world who have prayed for him, visited him and made telephone calls to him.
We are delighted that His Eminence Ling Rinpoche will be joining all of you for the Jangchup Lamrim Teachings that will be taking place at Sera Monastery starting on the 25th of December 2013.
